Letzter Post zu flattr-Einnahmen

In einigen Blogs wurden jeden Monat Übersichten veröffentlicht, was welcher Blogger mit flattr eingenommen hat. Nachdem ich auch hier monatlich entsprechende Angaben gepostet habe, war dieses Blog oft Teil dieser Übersichten.
Seit Dezember ist es leider so, dass man erst dann Einsicht bekommt, welche Buttons wieviel Geld eingebracht haben, wenn dieses Geld auch auf dem flattr-Konto landet, d.h. erst am 10. des Monats, nicht schon zum Monatswechsel. Deshalb habe ich Anfang Dezember keinen Post zum Thema gemacht, und später hatte ich dann keine Lust mehr. :-)
Wer es wissen will: Im November gab es einen Einbruch auf nur noch € 4,01 (vor allem fürs flattr-Plugin, wie immer), während es jetzt im Dezember „satte“ € 12,13 waren (wofür genau weiß ich, wie gesagt, noch nicht).
Letztlich denke ich aber, dass das außer den Übersichts-Bloggern eh niemanden wirklich interessiert hat. Wer es in Zukunft genauer wissen will, kann mir einfach eine E-Mail schicken, dann rücke ich die entsprechenden Daten natürlich gerne raus.

Nach dem kräftigen Ausrutscher nach oben im August (€ 15,02) scheinen sich die flattr-Einkünfte dieses Blogs auf dem Niveau ca. sechs bis sieben Euro im Monat zu stabilisieren:
Nach € 6,34 im September (von flattr nach Erstellung des Posts, das noch € 6,33 nannte, um einen Cent nach oben korrigiert) waren es im Oktober € 6,62, verteilt auf 17 Klicks (knap 39 ct/Klick). Somit habe ich einen Klick mehr bekommen als im September, der Wert pro Klick blieb annähernd gleich.
Spitzenreiter war wie immer das flattr-Plugin mit € 3,76 für 9 Klicks (knapp 42 ct/Klick), gefolgt vom Blog als Ganzem mit € 2,26 für 6 Klicks (knapp 38 ct/Klick). Je einen weiteren Klick erhielten die Posts über Handy-Kameras (45 ct) und den Megapixel-Wahn (15 ct).
Fazit: Nicht viel Geld, natürlich, aber immerhin übersteigen die Einnahmen die Ausgaben. Schön finde ich, dass auch nach Abzug der „Sondereinnahmen“ durch das flattr-Plugin noch eine kleine Marge übrig bleibt.

Spitzenreiter war wieder mein flattr-Plugin für blogger.com, inzwischen in der neuen Version, das acht Klicks für € 2,88 bekam (36 ct/Klick). Auch die alte Version erhielt noch zwei Klicks (87 ct, 43,5 ct/Klick). Den zweiten Platz belegt wiederum der Button für das Blog insgesamt mit vier Klicks (€ 2,13, mehr als 53 ct pro Klick!). Der Rest verteilt sich auf ein paar wenige, weitere Klicks.
Kann man daraus ein Fazit ziehen? Nicht wirklich. Vielleicht soviel:
Als kleiner, weitgehend unbekannter Blogger kann man mit flattr „verdienen“ (in sehr engen Grenzen), wenn man etwas zu bieten hat, was es sonst nirgends gibt. Wenn man gute, ausführliche Inhalte für eher anspruchsvolle Leser bietet, scheint das außerdem flattr-User anzuziehen, die mehr als nur ein paar Cent pro Klick ausgeben.
Aber das ist natürlich auch nur ein sehr grober Trend, den man aus meinen bisherigen Einnahmen vielleicht ablesen kann. Für einen kleinen Blogger ist flattr mit Sicherheit keine „sichere Einnahmequelle“.
Das sollte aber auch nicht der Grund für die Teilnahme sein.

I've completely reworked my old flattr plugin. The new version supports the new API v0.6. As the old API is deprecated now, it makes sense for all bloggers to switch to the new version.
There are three pieces of code to paste in now, but it's still not really complex.

clubber plex did a Spanish adaptation of the step by step part of this post, so if you prefer Spanish over English, go here. It doesn't include the explanations part, though, so if you experience problems, come back here and read the rest.

Here's the instructions:

• Download blogger-flattr-plugin-head.txt, blogger-flattr-plugin-footer.txt and blogger-flattr-plugin-body.txt.
• Open blogger-flattr-plugin-head.txt and find the following line:

s.src = 'https://api.flattr.com/js/0.6/load.js?mode=manual&uid=12345&category=text&language=de_DE';

• Change the uid entry to your flattr user id or user name. I don't mind if you keep 12345 for tests; this is not some random test uid but actually my real flattr uid. :-) But don't forget to change the uid once you install it in your real blog!
• If you don't blog in German, change the language entry to an appropriate setting (use only values from this list).
• If you want large buttons, look down to the line that begins with document.write( and change button:compact to button:default there.
• Go to the Design tab in blogger.com and choose the 'Edit HTML' sub-tab. (If these are named slightly differently in English, please forgive me, this is translated back to English from German. If I'm wrong, please tell me so in the comments and I'll correct it.)
• Download the complete template and save a backup copy of it so you can go back to a working version if something goes wrong.
• Open the template in a text editor.
• Find the <head> tag at the beginning of the file. Directly after that tag, insert the complete contents of your edited blogger-flattr-plugin-head.txt.
• Find the </body> tag at the end of the file. Directly before that tag, insert the complete contents of blogger-flattr-plugin-footer.txt.

If you know what you are doing, you can now take the complete contents of blogger-flattr-plugin-body.txt, maybe tweak them to your likes and paste them wherever you want your flattr buttons to show up.
To get my layout, do the following:

• Find the following lines in your blogger template:

<div class='post-body entry-content'>
  <data:post.body/>
    <div style='clear: both;'/> <!-- clear for photos floats -->

• Paste in the complete contents of blogger-flattr-plugin-body.txt after those lines.
• If your template doesn't contain these lines, find <data:post.body/> and paste the stuff somewhere between that and where the enclosing div tag is closed. Some tweaking might be required to achieve sensible positioning.

Update: If you want to place the button in the footer beside the share buttons, look at BrunoB's solution here. (I didn't test that myself, but his blog looks good.)

Now you're nearly done! You only have to upload your edited template to blogger.com, and if you didn't do anything wrong, all will be good. ;-)

This plugin is still based on the works of Mattias Bomelin and Nicholas Gramlich, though I did a major rework to adapt it to the new API.

If you have a flattr button for the whole blog like I have at the right, be sure update it to the new API, too, if you haven't done so already.
Also, Mattias from flattr recommended not to use the button parameter in conjunction with load.js, so I moved that down to the button definition itself. Now, hopefully, everything should work.

Caveat: If you get an error for a single post but not for others, this could be because the post's title or the post itself is shorter than 5 characters. flattr doesn't support a title or a description (which is where your post ends up) that is shorter than 5 characters. If you have a suggestion how I could fill the space up without garbling the flattr thing for posts with titles like "uh", please send me an email. For the time being, just use titles and posts longer than 5 characters.

Known problem: Internet Explorer 7 only shows errors in buttons for posts that have not been flattred yet. The other buttons work. I don't know if that's caused by flattr's API or by my JavaScript coding, and I won't look into it any further as it does work with all current browsers, including IE 8. But if you have a hint how this could be solved, I'll happily integrate it, of course.

If you're experiencing other problems, mail your edited template to the contact email address. I'll look into it when I have time to. This means don't expect a response within 24 hours, it might take weeks.
And I do expect that you tried everything you could think of yourself before you emailed me. I will not even answer requests to do all the work for you—it's really not that complicated, and there's step-by-step guidance above!
I hope this works as well for everyone else as it does for me. If not, please comment or send an email!

Small Update: The truncation of the actual text did not work as expected: Should have truncated at a space and added "…", instead it simply truncated at char 980, possibly chopping words in the middle. Turns out JavaScript regular expressions don't work on multiline strings. :-)
The new version first replaces all newlines by spaces, and voila, truncation works as it should. (I only changed blogger-flattr-plugin-head.txt, the others stayed as they were.)

How the flattr API works
As several users thought they were experiencing problems while everything was perfectly ok, here are some explanations about how flattr's API works and how everything looks like if it's ok:
First, don't expect a flattr thing to magically appear for all your ten-thousands of old posts in your blog. A post will be submitted to flattr.com and created as a flattr thing there at the moment when the first user clicks the flattr button.
Before that (i.e. while the button still shows the number zero), there is no flattr thing.
This also means that while buttons with one or more flattrs have a link to the flattr thing at flattr.com in the white area around the number, buttons with zero flattrs don't. If you manually create a flattr thing for a post at flattr.com, also not-yet-flattred buttons will have a link to the thing.
Second, you can't flattr yourself. That's why all the buttons on your blog show "My thing" (or only "My" on some browsers) and are not clickable while you are logged in at flattr.com.
You can see what others see if you log out at flattr.com, but trying to flattr a post will then only take you the flattr login page, of course. If you want to test if flattring is possible at all, you'll have to ask a friend who also uses flattr to test-flattr one of your posts.

Legal stuff: The plugin is published hoping that it will help and comes with no warranty whatsoever, of course. Use it at your own risk. If proper or improper use leads to any kind of damage, I can not be held liable. You are free to use the plugin free of any charges or claims and change the code as you like. flattr lohnt sich – noch viel mehr!

Eigentlich wollte ich ja nicht mehr über flattr berichten, im Speziellen nicht über die Einnahmen, weil darüber alles gesagt schien und die Menge ohnehin nicht wirklich erwähnenswert war.
Im August haben die Einnahmen jetzt aber dermaßen zugelegt, dass ich doch noch einmal darüber schreiben muss: Diesmal waren es erstaunliche € 15,02 – nur im August!
Das liegt sicher daran, dass flattr jetzt nicht mehr invite-only ist und mehr User daran teilnehmen. Außerdem scheint es jetzt mehr Leute zu geben, die entweder selten flattren oder relativ große Geldmengen vergeben: Ich habe mehrere Klicks bekommen, die für sich allein über einen Euro wert waren.

Am meisten Klicks (18 an der Zahl) hat wieder das flattr-Plugin erhalten, es war in diesem Monat € 4,65 wert. Erstaunlich (und für mich sehr erfreulich) ist, dass der flattr-Button rechts für mein Blog zwar „nur“ sechs Klicks angezogen hat, die aber insgesamt satte € 6,45 wert waren. Der Rest verteilt sich auf verschiedene Artikel.
Das ist jetzt tatsächlich mehr als nur geringfügig. Natürlich sind € 13,02 „Gewinn“ immer noch keine große Sache, aber es ist doch erstaunlich viel.
Ich seh's kommen, Ende des Jahres werfe ich meinen Job hin und lebe nur noch flattr und meinem Blog. ;-)

P.S.: Im Ernst: Vorerst bleibt das Geld erstmal trotzdem bei flattr; ggfs. kann ich ja auch auch meine monatlich zu vergebende Summe ein wenig hochsetzen. Wenn das noch mehr wird, könnte es sich aber irgendwann wirklich lohnen, da auch mal etwas abzuheben.

Ich hätte es nicht erwartet, aber es ist tatsächlich eingetreten: Ich verdiene Geld mit flattr!
Ok, das ist eigentlich fast schon übertrieben, sind es doch letztlich pro Monat nur Cent-Beträge. Trotzdem ist es mehr, als ich erwartet hätte.
Konkret: Der erste „Teilmonat“ Ende Mai war der lukrativste: Da ich nur ein paar Tage dabei war, wurden mir 29 Cent abgezogen, im gleichen Zeitraum erhielt ich flattrs für € 1,67.
Im Juni war waren es € 2,17 zu € 2,–, im Juli € 2,40 zu € 2,–.
Somit habe ich satte € 1,95 verdient! :-)
(Obwohl mein Blog alles andere als als wirklich vielbesucht ist, ist das übrigens etwas weniger, als ich im gleichen Zeitraum mit Google Ads eingenommen habe. Zieht man allerdings die flattr-Ausgaben nicht ab, war flattr mehr wert als die Anzeigen. Das nur am Rande.)
Die Einnahmen gehen vor allem auf das Konto meines flattr-Plugins für blogger.com, das insgesamt € 3,41 wert war, mithin etwas mehr als die Hälfte meines „Gesamteinkommens“. Nimmt man die während der Erstellung des Plugins erfolgten Forum-Posts im flattr-Forum hinzu, sind es sogar € 3,92. Und es wird mehr, denn mittlerweile ist das Plugin bei flattr „offiziell“ verlinkt.
Insgesamt ist das also mehr als nur positiv – hätte nicht gedacht, dass es so kommt.

Ich hätte es nicht erwartet, aber es ist tatsächlich eingetreten: Ich verdiene Geld mit flattr!
Ok, das ist eigentlich fast schon übertrieben, sind es doch letztlich pro Monat nur Cent-Beträge. Trotzdem ist es mehr, als ich erwartet hätte.
Konkret: Der erste „Teilmonat“ Ende Mai war der lukrativste: Da ich nur ein paar Tage dabei war, wurden mir 29 Cent abgezogen, im gleichen Zeitraum erhielt ich flattrs für € 1,67.
Im Juni war waren es € 2,17 zu € 2,–, im Juli € 2,40 zu € 2,–.
Somit habe ich satte € 1,95 verdient! :-)
(Obwohl mein Blog alles andere als als wirklich vielbesucht ist, ist das übrigens etwas weniger, als ich im gleichen Zeitraum mit Google Ads eingenommen habe. Zieht man allerdings die flattr-Ausgaben nicht ab, war flattr mehr wert als die Anzeigen. Das nur am Rande.)
Die Einnahmen gehen vor allem auf das Konto meines flattr-Plugins für blogger.com, das insgesamt € 3,41 wert war, mithin etwas mehr als die Hälfte meines „Gesamteinkommens“. Nimmt man die während der Erstellung des Plugins erfolgten Forum-Posts im flattr-Forum hinzu, sind es sogar € 3,92. Und es wird mehr, denn mittlerweile ist das Plugin bei flattr „offiziell“ verlinkt.
Insgesamt ist das also mehr als nur positiv – hätte nicht gedacht, dass es so kommt.

Wie im letzten Post schon anklang, bin ich jetzt Mitglied bei flattr.
Für die, die noch nichts davon gehört haben: flattr bietet die Möglichkeit, den Autoren bestimmter Beiträge im Netz ein bisschen Geld zukommen zu lassen, um sie in ihrer Arbeit zu unterstützen. Man kann damit Blog-Einträge „loben“, aber auch Musikstücke, Videos, Bilder oder beliebigen sonstigen Content.
Voraussetzung ist, dass der Autor flattr-Mitglied ist und neben dem Content einen flattr-Button platziert hat.
Um teilzunehmen, macht man sich einen flattr-Account und lädt via PayPal oder Moneybookers ein bisschen Geld hoch. Von diesem Betrag wird dann monatlich ein einstellbarer Betrag abgezogen (mindestens € 2,–).
Der wird am Ende des Monats auf alle verteilt, die man geflattrt hat. Bei einem Betrag von € 2,– und zehn Klicks auf verschiedene flattr-Buttons werden pro Button also 20 ct augeschüttet. Oder vielmehr 18 ct, weil flattr selbst 10 % behält.
Solange man Geld auf dem flattr-Konto hat, werden die monatlichen Beträge immer abgezogen. Klickt man einen Monat lang auf keinen flattr-Button, wird der monatliche Betrag gespendet – weg ist er auf jeden Fall.
Ist nicht mehr genug Geld für den monatlichen Betrag vorhanden, wird der vorhandene Rest genommen und verteilt. Sobald das Konto auf null gefallen ist, ist der Account inaktiv, und man kann weder Klicks verteilen noch Geld einnehmen.
Die Idee dahinter ist, dass im Netz nicht alles kostenlos sein muss und es eigentlich gut wäre, wenn man anderen freiwillig etwas geben könnte, wenn man ihre Arbeit mag. Das muss einfach und praktisch vonstatten gehen können.
Dass man nur Geld einnehmen kann, wenn man gleichzeitig auch Geld verteilt, ist ein weiterer guter Trick. Damit ist sichergestllt, dass auch Geld in Umlauf kommt und nicht jeder nur einnehmen will.
Derzeit ist flattr noch in der Beta-Phase, und man braucht eine Einladung, um mitmachen zu können. Als Mitglied kann ich andere einladen; wenn also jemand Lust bekommen hat, schreibe er mir einfach eine kurze E-Mail (siehe Kontakt-Link rechts), und ich werde eine Einladung veranlassen.

As this post is intended for an international audience, I'll write it in English.
As I'm a memeber of flattr.com since a few days, I wanted to add a flattr button to my blog posts.
I found this solution on Nicolas Gramlich's blog (who copied most of the script from Mattias Bomelin), but it worked only on short blog entries. All others showed only a large "ER" which seems to be the flattr error message.
If Nicolas hasn't changed his Blogger template yet, you can see the behaviour if you click on the link above. (Looks good sometimes, shows error at other times.)
When I investigated the issue, I found out that the flattr decription as sent by the plugin was too long, and I was also told that it shouldn't contain newlines or unescaped ' chars. Update: This seems to have been a wrong information, at least if a div tag is used like in the script. The posts ended up with literal \n and \' in them, so I put the relevant lines in comments.
I tweaked everything a bit, and here's a solution to the problem:
Click this link to get a changed version of the plugin.
It will:

• Use the post itself as the flattr description just as the original plugin did, but …
• It will remove all HTML tags from the flattr description.
• It will replace newlines by \n. See update above.
• It will escape ' chars to \'. See update above.
• It will truncate the description to a maximum length of 980 chars. If possible, it will use a space as truncation point and add "…".
• It will respect other flattr limits and truncate the title to a maximum length of 80 chars and the tags to a maximum length of 230 chars in a similar manner. (I stayed a little away from the hard limits of 100 / 255 chars, respectively.)
• Update: flattr requires the title of a flattr thing to have at least five chars. So if you have a blog post called "Uh!" it won't be enough and you'll get an error in the flattr button. I couldn't think of a good possibility to fill missing chars without garbling the blog post title, so I just kept it the way it is (suggestions welcome). So this is a caveat: Always use post titles longer than 5 chars! ;-)

As you can see in this post, I added the flattr button to the bottom of the post, different from what Nicolas did. To achieve that, I placed it in the 'post-body entry-content' div. Here are a few lines from the Blogger template and the start of the plugin to illustrate where I put it:

If anybody knows how to change the content of the RSS and Atom feeds I'd appreciate a notice as I'd like to add a flattr button to the feeds, too.
